Yippee Ki Yay…

“Don't go in there!”

“Oh man, that guy's gonna get it in the end.”

“Keep your shoes on!”

This year I skipped the big New Year's Eve parties, curled up on the couch in my sweatpants, and watched the movie Die Hard with a friend.

Normally, I hate it when people talk through movies, but we had a blast yelling at the screen.

“That's Hans Gruber! Don't give him a gun!”

“Why do you keep telling the terrorists what you're doing? You'd get more done if they didn't know you were there!"

I thought of this on New Year's Day, when I heard a podcaster ask this great start-of-year question:

“If your life were a movie and the audience were watching up to this point, what would they be screaming at the screen telling you to do with your life?”

I love this. It's so simple, and so clarifying.

While I often talk to my coaching clients about the power of their self-awareness, and about thinking in terms of story (not just the stories they tell, but the bigger Story they want to be a part of), this question makes it so visual and punchy.

(I even think I have to add it to my Soulful Solopreneur Workbook for Reflection & Renewal for next year).

So I'll invite you to take a moment to think about this question now.

What would your audience be screaming at the screen?

It can be for your business or for your life (what brave action, or decision you're avoiding, or one habit to change would impact you the most?).

And if you really don't know what they'd be saying, can you enlist some outside help to give you some clarifying perspective?

(As a coach, it's often gratifying that I'm not just metaphorically “yelling at the screen” –I get to step into the story and actively point the way forward).

It's your story.

You've got this,

Jane
