The Show Must…

Let me set the scene:

It was the halfway point of the show, and intermission was running waay too long. The audience was restless.

Why was it taking so long to restart the performance?

Well, whether his “shrimp on the barbie” was undercooked, or he was allergic to whatever was served for “brekkie”… the keyboardist had found himself suddenly, violently ill.

It was a performance of “La La Land” in Sydney, Australia.

The show featured a live orchestra playing the movie's score as it was projected onto a large screen. The keyboard was the centerpiece of the music. 

2500 people were waiting for the show to continue.

Producers couldn't find any professional musicians nearby, despite frantic calls during intermission.

The Oscar winning composer/conductor Justin Hurwitz realized he was about to have to cancel the second half of the show.

Hurwitz decided to throw a hail-mary pass:

He turned to the audience and asked, “Is there a pianist in the house? Like, an amazing sight-reader?”

A 21-year-old university student in the audience nervously raised his hand. 

They brought him to the front, gave him a quick tutorial on the score and the high-tech keyboard, and the show went on.

He nailed it. 

He even did a long keyboard solo, wowing the audience. They gave him a standing ovation. He got a great boost for his future music-career.

The show was saved with both creative thinking and brave risk-taking.

Speaking of crucial halfway-points:

We're midway through the year already (!).

Perhaps you're even taking an “intermission” (vacation). I hope so.

The second half of 2026 is coming up soon, and it's a great time to take stock of where things are in your business/work. 

And whether or not you've made meaningful progress on your goals & intentions for 2026 yet, there's good news:

It's never too late to take creative action, make a simple pivot, or take courageous risks to get the “show” back on track.
